Laura Lindsey: Mother, Students, Volunteer

When Laura Lindsey originally pictured her life, she didn't anticipate her current journey. She never imagined being a single mother, and she never imagined having to live in Section 8 housing.

But she did imagine having the strength to overcome any obstacle placed in her path, and that is exactly what this 29 year old, single mother of a beautiful 6 year old daughter is doing. Laura is a self-described "temporary" resident at Fairborn Apartments, who moved into the apartments in 2008.

Since then this positive, motivated, sports fanatic and avid Ohio State University and Cincinnati Bengal football fan, has been working hard to better the life of her and her daughter.

"This is just a stop for me," She declares. "I don't believe in handouts. I believe in hard work. I can't live my life off the system. I have a plan for my success and a major part of that plan is education."

Growing up in a home where education was valued, but college was not always pushed; she realized on her own that education was a key to her success.

"I saw the writing on the wall. Education is everything! In a few years the work force will require a minimum of a BA just work at McDonalds."

With that clarity, Laura focused her lifeand began to put the changes into motion. At age 24, Laura enrolled full-time at a local community college and began her journey to success.

"After I earned my AA, my next step was to obtain my BA from Wright State University.

However, I was informed it would take at least another two years." A year and a half later, Laura proudly walked across the stage with a BA in Psychology.

But once again, life put a temporary road block in her path. Graduating from college during one of the country's worst economic crisis, finding a job in her field without a graduate degree, was not easy.

"It has been hard, but I keep pressing on, knowing that this is one more road block that I must overcome! I do it for my daughter. I want her to know anything is possible and to grow up confident and independent.

But most importantly, I want to be able to tell her 10 years from now, I did it, and if I can do it as a single mom, you can surely do it at 18. College won't be an option but an expectation for her!"

Lindsey has now set her sights on a bigger goal: to obtain a MBA or a PhD in Industrial-organizational psychology. Her ultimate dream job would be working with HR to train employees, impact workplace behavior and increasing productivity.

Laura also dreams about being in a position to give back to the community. Although she is still planning and envisioning her life, Laura has the drive and dedication to make all of her dreams come true.
